It all began one innocent Sunday in April 2009 on a beach in South Boston. James and I met in celebration of a yoga workshop completion. We had gathered with friends on a beautiful sunny day, throwing down some pretty sweet handstands in the sand. One of the first things that James asked me upon meeting was if I wanted to go to Mallorca. (Background: Mallorca has some amazing rock climbing. As I was unemployed and had some time on my hands, I believe he was inquiring for a travel partner. I had just moved back from living there for the 2nd time and was stunned that anyone knew where it was.)
We quickly realized we had a lot in common—rock climbing, yoga, love of cooking and eating, great friends and desire to travel to name a few—and our days soon were spent with each other. Travel plans grew from a month long trip through Central America to something larger. James wanted to move to Spain but as I had just come back, I wanted to go someplace new. So he pulled together this trip involving rock climbing (what he wanted to do) and seeing “things” (what I wanted to do.)
We started planning for this trip about 2 months after we met, buying the RTW tickets just 2 1/2 months after that first meeting at the end of April. 3 1/2 months later we took off. Some people did tell us we were crazy, but I reckoned that we did lots of “dry runs” as I liked to call them. Road trips for over a week visiting with friends, couchsurfing, cooking, camping, rock climbing, doing yoga in close quarters and on occasion, minimal (read “no”) showering. I always came back home wanting more, so I took that as a good sign.
The idea was to travel for 6 months then live in Spain for 3 months, wrapping up our time with a cousin of mine”s wedding at the end of June in England. But as you can see, our trip got extended and here we are still traveling. And more importantly still talking
